Emma was moving up to Ray and Rebecca was moving to Pre-Pike despite the fact that she is ready to move up. They had to hold her back because of age. The next class is without parent and she has to be 3 for that. Soon enough.
So, we have spent the first couple of lessons working out some kinks. Rebecca, as many of us know, is extremely strong willed. When she gets something in her head there is NO changing her mind. The first two lessons were spent with me trying to coerce her into doing what the teacher wanted. Then I just decided that since she was the only one signed up for the class that I was going to go out on a limb and suggest to the teacher that I stay in the water, but swim laps instead of staying with Rebecca. The third class is when we gave it a try and she was an absolute angel. I am so glad to see that she does better without me than with me. That is what I have hoped for her. That she is a "strong, independent great listener when Mommy isn't around" kind of kid. I certainly don't want to get in the way of her progress, so I will gladly swim aside and get some exercise at the same time. Good for both of us.
Emma was a little nervous about being moved up into the next class because she wasn't sure if she would be able to do what they asked her to do. After the first class the teacher said that Emma can't kick in the water because she won't put her face in and suggested we get her a pair of swimming goggles. So, off to the sporting good's store we went.
She has had one lesson since and it really made a difference. She isn't constantly rubbing her eyes.
I am very proud of both my girls even when they look like this:
